For ramblers there is the opportunity to tackle challenging fell walks including Cross Fell, the highest peak in the Pennines, or to walk along a section of the Pennine Way which passes two spectacular waterfalls, High Force and Cauldron Snout.

For a less strenuous day out, visit Barnard Castle, take a trip on Northern England’s highest narrow gauge railway between Alston and Kirkhaugh, or explore the award-winning open air museum of Beamish.
